Over the years Ahead's Nero series of CD Authoring software have proved to be the perfect solution for all types of CD/DVD backup needs. It has grown to be the numero uno choice for users across the world due to its simplicity and effectiveness. It has been the perfect utility for backing up CDs, burning CD Images, Authoring your own CDs and DVDs with minimum fuss. So how does one improve on perfection? Or does the new edition really need an upgrade at all? Well, let's take a look for ourselves.
First look
The setup takes something from 5 to 10 minutes (including restart) depending on the choices you've selected. When you start Nero Burning ROM for the first time after installation, the first thing you notice missing is that annoying wizard, replaced by Nero Express 6, which according to me is any day more effective. Though the wizard was a preferred option for most novices as it used to get the job done in a matter of a few clicks, the Nero Express is far more configurable and a lot more effective than the wizard could ever be. Advanced users will surely appreciate this.
The overall look of Nero Burning ROM is a bit more colourful with bigger icons and smoothened edges. You can say they have taken a step towards the "human" interface. Thankfully, the menu system and the overall interface work more-or-less the same way as the previous versions; anyone who has used the Nero 5.x series will at once be placed on familiar grounds. You have a few more options for the kind of media you wish to author (including a nifty option for mini DVDs). One change that caught my fancy was the support for filename's that go over 64 letters. I was hoping they'd get rid of that ridiculous and unnecessary limitation.
Enough about the main program, let's see what else this baby has to offer.

The Complete Package
Included with Nero Burning ROM is Nero Vision Express 2.0, which may arguably be the best video authoring tool at its price. You have extensive options for authoring VCDs, SVCDs and mini DVDs. You can design your own menu style along with selectable chapters with small video snippets playing in the chapter selection menu. Nero Vision Express relies completely on a wizard interface, which though may be bothersome for advanced users due to its slow nature; it will surely appeal to newbies.
My favourite addition to the new Nero 6 Ultra package is the ShowTime, a media player that plays VCDs, SVCDs, DVDs and also has support for Mpeg-4 media. It's not only better on all these formats than the default Windows Media Player; it's also much lighter and starts up much faster. Of course it falls short on options when compared to other commercial DVD players such as PowerDVD or WinDVD, but as a part of a package this is brilliant.
For you audiophiles who want nothing but perfection out of their audio CDs, there are two audio editing tools - Soundtrax and Nero Wave Editor. Using these utilities you can edit Wave files and do various things such as normalize all track volumes, combine two tracks into one, cut off the extra silence, add effects and also do some equalizer settings such as increase the bass, decrease the treble, etc. Quite standard editing tools, but I highly doubt you'd need much more as a standard home user. There's also Nero Mix included, which is an MP3 Player, rips audio CDs and includes options for burning audio CDs too.
Besides the above there are the standard repeats from the previous version, though they all have been updated to an extent. These include Nero Cover Designer, CD-DVD Speed for benchmarking optical drives, DriveSpeed for your drive's rotational speed control and Nero InfoTool to give you information on everything that your drive is capable of doing.
Phew! Now that's what I call a comprehensive package.
So is it worth an upgrade?
After using it for around a week, I think it's safe to say that Nero 6 Ultra is hands down the best and the most complete CD authoring/back up package currently available. It may be filled with a lot more eye candy, than the previous version but you certainly don't feel any drop in the performance. All the CD/DVD burners that we tested on it gave similar burn times as in Nero Burning ROM 5.5.
To mention a few drawbacks (just for the sake of it); the wizard options in the extra programs is quite slow and annoying to use especially if you have a lot of CDs lined up to burn. That and an image editor would have been a great addition to the Nero Cover Designer (as provided in the rival software - Adaptec's Easy CD Creator).
hope i satisfy u with this post!
